Greetings and welcome back to my Blog Page where this week’s topic is based on defining Eczema and dispelling the miseducation of why this condition is still questionable today amongst many people.

Chances are, and without any known acknowledgment at all, you’ve probably have been ingesting and/or maybe even applying harmful chemicals to your body over a period of time for x amount of reasons. This may lead to a reaction within the integumentary system and is one of the first signs (besides pain/discomfort) for you to give direct attention to the cause of it in order to restore balance to your body. As the body does have its own way of effectively alarming you to be mindful of an alteration occurring within its system.

ORDER

First, briefly, I’ll share with you my own personal experience with skin irritation. About two months ago, I would unnoticeably reach down to scratch itchy knees. Then I noticed a change to both elbows and knees as they felt “rough”, abnormally raised and slightly hardened to touch when I had applied a moisturizer to these areas.  So, when I observed the skin change, nearly right away a warning signinitiated that something was obviously indifferent about my body. As you continue to read on, I will reveal the cause and quick resolve to my skin flare-up.

Granted I knew exactly how to identify eczema from my stent of treating multiple patients at a retirement community for nine years, as various skin ailments had occurred all of the time, and now adamantly studying Naturopathic medicine, I believe that there is a great disconnect to the underline causes to skin irritation, such as Eczema and how all of these diversions are simple to explore.

As stated by Naturopaths, the imbalance that causes eczema may not be found eternally but lies within the body.

What is Eczema?

According to studies, dermatitis was estimated to affect 245 million people globally in 2015. A rule of thumb to remember is that medically the general term for any type of skin inflammation is called Dermatitis. The most common types of Dermatitis are Atopic Dermatitis, Nummular Dermatitis, Irritant Contact Dermatitis, and Allergic Contact Dermatitis.

The distinction between Eczema and Dermatitis to describe a skin disorder can be puzzling as both terms are almost always used synonymously. A lot of people use the term eczema to refer exclusively to Atopic Dermatitis

The inflammation of the skin that coexists with Dermatitis, or Eczema produces scaling, flaking, thickening, weeping, crusting, color changing and very often itching.

Underlying Imbalances

Stress, and certainly chronic tension, can cause and over exacerbate dermatitis. Worry, anxiety, doubt, and denial is the initial catalyst to every external imbalance and is the major focal point of developing Eczema. Then after considering this preliminary notion in every possible way, make note that skin flare-ups vary from person-to-person.

Other external influences are the weather changing from warm to cold, a dry atmosphere, exposure to allergens, stress, or infections like colds can emphasize this condition.

The most common case of Dermatitis result from allergies called allergic contact dermatitis. As skin inflammation may be linked to contact with medical creams, perfumes, latex, ointments, cosmetics, rubber, poison ivy, metal or metal alloys such as gold, silver, and nickel found in jewelry or zippers.

You may also be inflicted if other family members have a history of hay fever, such as myself, asthma, and/or Atopic Dermatitis.  In these cases, it is likely that a child is prone to Atopic Dermatitis that will develop based off of the factors mentioned at any given time throughout his/her lifetime.

Another factor that may lead to Eczema is a condition known as “leaky gut”, low levels of hydrochloric acid in the stomach called Hypochlorhydria.  This can occur when the intestines become porous and allow small particles of undigested food to enter the bloodstream, evoking an allergic reaction. This can be detected by a urine test, and more information may be found here: Testing for leaky gut syndrome-https://www.sovereignlaboratories.com/blog/testing-for-leaky-gut/.

A genetically base imbalance in the enzyme delta-6-desaturase, which is an overgrowth of yeast in the system called candidiasis may contribute to eczema.  Please see more information on how to identify candidiasis here: CDC https://www.cdc.gov/fungal/diseases/candidiasis/index.html.

Finally, some people have a sensitivity to sunlight that may cause skin irritation. This is more detectable during warmer summer months.

The Skin Breakdown

If your skin remains in direct contact with the irritant, then the Dermatitis is likely to spread and become more acute.  In this skin “breakdown” summary are the various types of Eczema.

~
Atopic Dermatitis also referred as Atopic Eczema, or in children, Infant Eczema is an ailment connected to allergy-prone individuals. It typically appears to the face, bends of elbows, behind knees, and is chronically itchy. According to Naturopaths, it usually appears within the first year, and almost always within the first five years. While women who take probiotics during pregnancy have had success at reducing Atopic Dermatitis in their infants.

~Seborrhea causes scaly patches and red skin to the scalp and/or face, which is believed to be an abundant growth of yeast in the body.

~Dermatitis Herpetifom is is a chronic, itchy skin rash that appears as bumps or blisters. This ailment is connected to intestinal and immune systems disorders triggered by the consumption of dairy and/or gluten products.

~Nummular dermatitisis a chronic condition in which round, scaling lesions appear on the limbs.  This may be caused by an allergy to nickel and frequently associated with dry skin.

Considerations

*Alternative Practitioners note that dairy products clog up pores- milk cheese and other dairy products tend to produce excess mucus in the body, which can disrupt the circulatory system and irritate the skin. Reducing or eliminating dairy products from your diet for a few weeks is a way to test to see whether they are connected to the skin issue.

*add brown rice or millet to diet

*avoid eggs, soy food, wheat, processed foods, white flour, fried foods, and again-dairy products

*try a gluten-free diet for x6 weeks, then one-by-one introduce foods back into the diet and see if imbalances change.

*keep home humidified

*use perfume-free moisturizers, detergents or natural/organic health and beauty supplies

Suggestions

*Poultices- combining dandelion and yellow dock root can be helpful

*Foods- flaxseed oil, coconut/olive oil, dates, hemp, green and orange foods, whole grains, legumes are great for the body systems

*External- shea butter, coconut/castor oil to moisture skin. For itching, a mixture of castor oil as the base with a drop of clove, lemon and lavender essential oils. Organic African Shea Butter did clear up my skin irritation almost immediately

*Vitamin Estabilizes cell membranes and immune function

*Herb’s Blackthorn, Blueberry Leaf, Hawthorne Berry, Nettle, and Rue contain flavonoids, excellent for reducing inflammation

Overall, be vigilant and consciously aware of chronic stress, toxic productsapplied to the skin or the types of food being ingested for they are your mapping to external health and wellbeing.  I get that it’s difficult to break cycles, but if it were easy, everyone would be doing it.  All it takes is just one person to break a pattern of the miseducation.
