HISTORY IN THE NOW
Celebrating our ancestors is an everyday acknowledgement and
honor. We are mature enough to understand that their recognition is not meant
for a one day out of the year holiday event to consider their sacrifices, strength,
intellect, and leadership qualities. Dr. King and many others stood- up to the government’s
hostility and hate directed towards the melaninated individuals in the U.S.
that continue to still abruptly perpetuate today a population of only 14% of “black”
people http://blackdemographics.com/
. What I find even more disturbing around this time is the fact that some will
go as far as to putting forth the initiative to shop the MLK deals of the week at
mattress and furniture stores, further rocking indigenous/melaninated peoples
back to sleep in their participation, but those are just my thoughts to what I
see. I do resume in knowing how it’s important to see the communities around us
celebrating our ancestors outside of the westernized way with their depictions of
us (Hollywood).
Besides that, I’m currently residing at this time, in a
predominantly all European city and state, Portland, OR. I find that it’s a bit
difficult sometimes to locate details to when and where Afrocentric activities
are taking place in the city for more apparent and visible reasons.
Today, I took it upon myself and did some fieldwork to
discover if any Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s Celebration here around Portland are
being hosted throughout the week. There
are 6 observances dedicated to the great Rev. Dr. and his works around the
“rose city” over the course of this week http://www.oregonlive.com/entertainment/index.ssf/2018/01/six_ways_to_celebrate_martin_l.html
. All 6 events will be greatly received but I have my eye on a very special
event coming up January 17th.
At Vancouver’s Clark College on Jan 17th, a travelling museum exhibit titled Black History 101 Mobile Museum,
will display a compilation of more than 7,000 artifacts centering on the
pivotal events and personalities of 1968. There will be an exceptional
presentation given by Professor Griff,
a former artist in the rap group Public Enemy.
I know that the brotha Professor
Griff is an ideal speaker, activist, artist, lecturer, author, father, and
etc. to speak on the works of any key and monumental experiences throughout
time. Check out one of his media pages here -à

From 1 o 2pm in the
student center, Professor Griff will talk about how the events of the
late 1960s help form Public Enemy’s work.
Guest are asked to bring a non-perishable item for the Clark college
Penguin Pantry and The Share House Backpack program from 10a.m- 6p.m January
17. Vancouver’s Clark College Link http://www.clark.edu/cc/mlk
Remember that each day is the best way to honor our beloved
ones, Peace.
